Through these programs, the participants enhance their professional skills and maintain continuing education credit requirements of their profession, where professionals are trained and discuss their workload, methods, and cases with others in their peer group. We serve the entire central coast, all the way from San Luis Obispo to Calabasas with over 25 institutional active partnerships to date. You could be the next one! Offering in-service programs through UCSB-Extension enables institutions to offer their staff a quality way to stay current on their professional requirements. At the end of the course, participants get their Continuing Education units, official transcripts, and if applicable, recertifications. The process is easy, affordable, and proven beneficial over the years. Till date close to a thousand professionals have benefitted from their organization’s In-Service arrangement with us.

This program is designed to prepare education leaders to understand and respond to the multi-faceted challenges of educational leadership. This program, which is grounded in the California Administrative Content Expectations (CAPE), provides a comprehensive approach to leadership growth and development. Over the course of 12 months, candidates learn from current and former site and district administrators, engage in action research, complete Fieldwork and prepare to pass the California Administrator Performance Assessment.
This program is only open to individuals who have been accepted into the SBCEO PASC program.

The Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO) Teaching Induction Program (TIP)

The Santa Barbara County Education Office Teacher Induction Program is a two year, state-accredited induction program intended to ease new teachers’ transition into the profession, accelerate teacher effectiveness and enhance teacher retention. We offer general education and special education teachers who hold a Preliminary Multiple Subjects, Preliminary Single Subject, or Preliminary Education Specialist Credentials the opportunity to fulfill the requirements for the California Clear Credential. Participating in new teachers receive job-embedded mentoring support while they develop and enact learning plans to support their growth in the California Standards for the Teaching Profession within the context of their teaching position.
This program is only open to individuals who have been accepted into the SBCEO TIP program.

Tri-Lingual, Community-Based Early Childhood and Literacy Education for Indigenous Migrant Children in California - INTERNAL ENROLLMENT ONLY
These courses form a professional development experience for members of the indigenous Mexican communities in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties who wish to teach young children in local preschool and early care settings there. These classes are designed to examine best teaching practices associated with supporting the language, literacy, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of young children, as recommended by the California Department of Education and The National Association for the Education of Young Children. These include recommended caretaker practices for promoting rich conversations and early literacy with young children and for promoting young children’s cognitive and socio-emotional development and communicatively competent language use (e.g., conflict management strategies). The courses emphasize best practice considerations such as strong family-teacher relationships, parent involvement and education, culturally-relevant curriculum, and inclusion. A major goal of the courses is to provide students with research and ethnographic skills to investigate and honor the literacy and socialization practices of the indigenous Mexican communities where students will teach.

The institute provides a program of activities for participating teachers of writing from all schools, pre-school through university. Participants work in a community of fellows devoted to teaching each other and to engaging in a cooperative inquiry into the most advanced research and writing about composition, its pedagogy, and its linguistic and psycholinguistic bases. Assisted by the instructional staff, participants examine the current theory in composition, develop techniques for teaching writing skills, enhance their own abilities as writers and as Teacher/Consultants in workshops throughout the regular school year, and impart what they have learned to them.

The course explores the philosophy, aims, scope, and culture of education and schooling and the current challenges to educators and students. Dialogue, as a meaning-making activity, is used to provide methodological tools for reflective inquiry. Both the course content and its methodology develop shared understandings about attention, learning, goodness, transformation, and intelligence, equipping each stakeholder with tools and experience to develop a cooperative learning community. A theme throughout the course is the notion of learning as a self-reflective process that includes an exploration of the nature of the mind and consciousness.

The primary learning outcome of this course is for students to be able to identify common seaweeds from the northern Channel Islands and Santa Barbara coastal area. Other knowledge students will develop is the use of herbarium specimens and online biodiversity databases in documenting seaweed diversity, the use of identification keys, basic macroalgal morphology, understanding the broad biogeographic patterns of the Point Conception area and a familiarity with the natural history and endemism found in the Channel Islands. Target audience: A range of participants, from naturalists and students to staff, faculty, and professional psychologists.

California Credential secondary science or science teaching experience. Selected through the screening application process by Materials Research Laboratory (MRL). This course is designed to assist experienced teachers who have participated in a science research internship at UCSB in the creation of an innovative science curriculum that emphasizes investigative science techniques and skills and provides students with opportunities to participate in open-ended inquiry-based experiments and projects. The curriculum incorporates the California Science Standards with particular emphasis on those standards that promote problem-solving and the use of advanced technology and software.

Elementary STEM CON & Beyond 2022 is a three-day, online professional development conference where elementary & secondary teachers engage in live and pre-recorded training on a wide range of STEM topics. Sessions are aimed to meet teachers where they are (literally & figuratively) to help them implement rigorous, innovative, and standards-based STEM lessons.
Throughout the conference, teachers gain access to video training as well as live panels and interviews with the presenters and special guests. Attendees will have multiple opportunities to interact with presenters to have their questions answered and to engage in discussion.
The class for credit will be open for enrollment until June 30, 2022.
Whole-Teacher EclecticCon 2021 is a five-day, online professional development event where elementary teachers engage in training on a wide range of topics. Sessions are aimed to meet teachers where they are (literally & figuratively) to help them implement rigorous, innovative, and standards-based lessons. The session list reflects our belief that great teaching includes core academics, but there’s so much more involved than that. The training offered will benefit teachers in any grade-level assignment.

The STEM Teacher Summit is a 3 day virtual STEM conference for K-5 teachers. The event will take place June 22-24, but teachers will have access to all of the trainings for a year. The event consists of 4 keynotes which will be approximately 30 minutes each and 12 sessions which will each be 45 minutes to an hour. Teachers will also have access to a Facebook group where there will be additional Q & A sessions. South Coast Science Project (SCSP) Science Summer Institute

The SCSP offers a week-long (40 hour) Institute for elementary (TK-6th) teachers during the first week of August each year at local school. The content of the Institute is on a six-year rotation cycle (physics, chemistry and engineering, earth science, environmental science, life science [molecules, organisms, and ecosystems], and life science [evolution and heredity]). During the Institute, teachers learn science content and engage in NGSS aligned three-dimensional activities that can be taken back to their classroom.
