Course DescriptionThis seminar focuses on the definition, characteristics, principles, processes, and concepts of and ethical issues pertaining to applied behavior analysis and their application to clinical practice and research in the area of severe developmental disabilities, particularly as it relates to autism and other developmental disabilities. Students engage in weekly seminars and conduct individual behavioral research projects to create opportunities for discussion in areas such as: direct behavioral intervention with children and families; training and supervising school staff to provide data-based classroom interventions for students with severe disabilities; training and supervising staff to provide behaviorally-informed after-school programming to special needs students; and preparing articles, conference presentations, and research grants grounded in behavior analytic principles. The seminar content includes presentations on the following topics: ethical and legal issues in behavior analysis, behavior and response classes, advanced issues related to reinforcement and punishment, stimulus control, establishing operations, functional relations, generalization, teaching contingency-shaped behavior, antecedent- and consequence-based intervention procedures, incidental teaching, and the multiple functions of language (i.e., mands, tacts, and intraverbals). Additionally, this course covers effective training procedures for direct care staff and supervisors, fidelity of implementation considerations, and ongoing monitoring and training to address treatment integrity. In addition to direct classroom contact hours, course participants meet regularly with a faculty member with expertise in behavior analytic procedures and concepts to discuss prospective behavioral research projects.
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Read, evaluate, and interpret current behavioral research articles on topics related to their research interests
- Analyze professional issues involved in the area of scholarly intervention research in the field of severe disabilities
- Define/respond to professional issues related to intervention and ethical responsibilities involved in behavioral research
- Engage in grant writing and grant management
- Submit for publication experimental and theoretical articles in academic journals and texts
- Present research and theoretical findings at national conventions
- Organize and conduct national professional conventions and conferences
PrerequisitesStudents should be participating in a practicum while enrolled in this course.
